Director's tips · 6 rules for good coverage[+]
  1. 01Wide, medium, tight. For every important moment, get all three sizes. It gives your editor somewhere to cut.
  2. 02Move, don't just zoom. Shift the camera about 30° between shots. Cuts look natural instead of jumpy.
  3. 03Hold for 10. Count to 10 before and after every move. Editors need the clean start and end.
  4. 04Cutaways are gold. Shoot twice as many as you think: hands, tools, faces listening, the place itself.
  5. 05Room tone at every location. Record 30 seconds of silence. It hides audio edits.
  6. 06Know your hero shot. Decide the one image that sums up the video, and give it extra time.

QuestionsFAQ
What is a shot list?[+]

A shot list is a simple plan of every shot you need to film: what's in frame, how big, from what angle, and how the camera moves. It keeps a shoot on track and makes sure your editor has everything they need.

How many shots do I need for a 2-minute video?[+]

For a typical interview-led marketing video, plan 25 to 40 shots: the interview from two angles, plus plenty of cutaways and details. Editors always want more cutaways than you think.

What is coverage in video?[+]

Coverage means filming the same moment in different shot sizes and angles (wide, medium, close-up) so the editor can cut between them smoothly. Good coverage is the difference between a video that feels professional and one that feels stuck.

Can I save my shot list as a PDF?[+]

Yes. Click "Download PDF" and choose "Save as PDF" in the print window. The PDF has checkboxes so your crew can tick off shots on set.

Is this shot list template free?[+]
